Last Friday, I was interrogated by about a dozen pastors. My ordination council took about two and a half hours and when it was done, the men unanimously recommended me for ordination without reservation. Now, what would I have done if they had not? I would have listened to their godly counsel, studied more thoroughly, and seen where was in error. But ultimately I answer to God, not men. However, it is encouraging to know that you have the support of those with whom you fellowship with. It was an encouragement to have my dad preach at my ordination. His challenge to me was uplifting and convicting at the same time as he taught me to pattern my ministry after the Great Master, Jesus. He pointed out that Jesus found a place of communion with the Father (Mark 1:34-35), Jesus had a sense of commision (Mark 1:36-39), and Jesus had a heart of compassion (Mark 1:40-42). Dr. Wally Higgins, churchplanter and pioneer missionary, preached to the congregation on the topic of caring for their pastor. Nothing really has changed in my life (except I expect everyone to call me reverend–actually I think that title is silly), but it was an encouraging day. These are some things that encouraged my heart.
1. The studying of the Word of God in preparation greatly blessed me.
2. The support of my friends in the ministry was uplifting.
3. Each in attendance had a loving, gracious spirit. No one was “out to get me” or prove me wrong. Each asked questions and some very difficult, but no one belittled me or my answers. I sensed love and appreciation from each one there.
4. My parents could attend, and we had a great time together.
5. Christ was exalted and God praised throughout the whole day.
Thanks to all who prayed, your prayers were answered.
Congratulations, Matt! We are so proud of the godly man you have become. Love you!
Matt, you did a wonderful job at the ordination. I was so glad to be there and share that time with you and Bonnie. I really enjoyed Carter too. 🙂 He is such a cutie! I have to tell you that that was the best ordination I have been to. You handled yourself very well – You think on your feet amazingly well. Your council was amazing too. You are right – no one was out to “get” you and there was truly a gracious spirit among all who were there. I am very proud of you. (In a good way) And I look forward to seeing how the Lord will bless you and Bonnie and your ministry in the days to come. I love you.
