Time for Thanks

I had a wonderful Thanksgiving holiday.  Turkey, ham, stuffing, sweet potatoes, pie, and all the rest was present at our table last Thursday.  But what I treasure the most this holiday was the time spent with family.  God has truly blessed me with a wonderful wife who loves the Lord and me.  In a few weeks our first son will be one year old.  Every time I come home, he comes running into my arms yelling “Daddy, Daddy.”  My parents are so giving and loving.  I just have so much fun talking to my Dad, joking with my Mom, and just plain being friends with them.  This Thanksgiving my cousin and his new wife came down to spend the holiday with us.  I hadn’t seen him in five years, and it was great to be able to reminisce about old times.  As I look back at this Thanksgiving, I have to ask myself “Why?”  Why has God blessed me so immensely?  Why do I not come from a broken home (as so many do today)?  When the divorce rate of evangelical Christians rises, my marriage grows sweeter every day, why?  When I visit with distant relatives, we can reminisce about how much fun we used to have; many individuals can’t have a conversation with family without getting into a fight, why?  Many questions swirl in my mind concerning what good I have or am that the Almighty God should bestow such blessings on my life.  When it comes right down to it, the answer must be nothing.  Nothing I have done deserves the blessings of the Almighty; it is only by His grace that I can with assurance say, “Every good gift and every perfect gives comes from above.”  Maybe God gives us these blessings so that when the trials of life comes, we can still count it all joy.  I am not sure why our merciful God has bestowed His goodness upon me in these “little things” of life, but I praise His great name and am thankful for His matchless grace.

“Lord, give me the grace to be able to praise you in the good in the bad, in easy and the difficult.  Help me to recognize the bounty you provide comes from your good hand because your eye is upon me.  Thank you for blessing me with all the spiritual blessings I can handle; thank you for the earthly blessings also.”
