Trembling at the Word

bible-pic.jpg Isaiah 66:1-2 “Thus says the Lord, The heaven is my throne, and the earth is my footstool:  where is the house that you build unto me?  and where is the place of my rest?  For all those things has my hand made, and all those things have been, says the Lord:  but to this man will I look, even to him that is poor and of a contrite spirit, and trembles at my Word.”

The phrase “trembles at My Word” appears again in verse 5 of this same chapter, except Isaiah is speaking there and he is addressing those whom God has just spoken to.  This phrase must characterize the believing Christian’s life.  How can be true servants of Christ when we cannot tremble at His Word.  The skeptic doubts God’s Word.  The fool mocks God’s Word.  The arrogant dismisses God’s Word.  The modernist changes God’s Word, and the compromiser filters God’s Word; but the penitent trembles at God’s Word.  How often have I taken a flipant approach to the Holy Word on the sacred pages of the Bible?  How often have taken His revelation for granted?  If the Almighty God whose throne is heaven and footstool is this world, who cannot be contained in the heavens of heavens has breathed out His will through the written Word; then what can I do except tremble at His Word?  The context of this passage is referring to God’s dealings with Israel.  It is addressing the judgment of God; but the very nature of God’s Word doesn’t change.  If it speaks of judgment, I must tremble.  If it speaks of mercy and grace, I must fall to my knees and tremble in deep contrition.  “Almighty Father, give me the grace to tremble before your Word.  Give me a penitent spirit that I may glimpse the Truth you have for me in your majestic Word.  Give me the patience to wait for your blessing through your Word.  Help me to tremble at your Word.”

I read this post and it made me think of a poem I wrote while reading J.C. Ryle’s book Holiness

    Tremble, Tremble, and Repent
(Based on an excerpt from Holiness by J. C. Ryle)

    Tremble, tremble and repent
See the Lord, His bow is bent
See His wrath and cry to Him
    Mercy, Mercy on our sin.

Justice from His throne doth pour.
    Sin, His presence doth abhor
    Set apart from woeful acts
God, the Lord knows all the facts

God can see your every thought
He knows all. You will be caught.
Fear the Lord, and all confess
    Forsake sin in humbleness

    Judgment, Judgment on my soul
Sin will ask a heavy toll
But the gift of God is free
    Call on Christ of Calvary.
