"Where no counsel is, the people fall: but in the multitude of counsellors there is safety." -Proverbs 11:14
It seems that this is a hard one for Christians, especially independent baptists. We are so independent, that many times we practically kill ourselves "for the Lord." The most noble offenders are, in fact, pastors. Sometimes pastors get lifted up with pride and fear revealing weakness to their flock or even other pastors. The congregants learn from their pastor's behavior, and they too fear to let anyone see their weakness. It is a sad thing to see, but it is real. Pride, arrogance, whatever you call it forces us to put on masks on Sunday morning. We will confide in our boss, our co-workers, our family; but we have to look and act a certain way on Sunday so that we can save face in front of our fellow-Christians. Christians struggle with depression, anger, and other sinful behaviors so they go see a psychologist, get drugged up. As Christians, the church is the one place we should feel safe to be open and honest. We are brothers and sisters in Christ. When was the last time you had a Christian friend come up to you and say, "I am feeling really depressed can we get together and pray this week"? When was the last time a Christian brother approached you and said, "I am really struggling to love my wife, could we talk about it" or "I just don't know what to do about my children"? When was the last time you or I opened up to the multitude of counsellors God has ordained called the church. Surely, there is safety there.
