Do I really know what true sacrifice is? How can I with my all that I have really understand sacrifice. I am afraid that in the greater context of modern American Christianity, we have forgotten what it means to sacrifice. In Mark 12, we see Jesus being rather “intrusive” in the affairs of the people. Could you imagine Jesus sitting in front of the treasury and watching how we cast in. How dare he, does he not know that this is a private matter? However, Jesus is the only one with the right to see how we “cast in.” It is an account that most Christians have heard many times. The rich cast in of their abundance, huge heaping handfuls stuffing the treasury box, but one poor, little old woman hobbles up to the box and drops in two mites (Robertson says this was 2/5 of a cent). Jesus then says something so profound the effects are still completely undiscovered today. He said that the poor widow cast in more than all the rich philanthropists. Either Jesus was not good at math or he is trying to make a point, which he does very well. He went on to say that whereas the others cast in of their abundance, this woman cast in all she had. Jesus is literally saying here that this woman had no more to live on. It was all given to God. I read this account several times and my heart broke. I rarely give all to Jesus, I give of my abundance. But this woman gave of her lack. Where are the George Muellers, the Hudson Taylors, Adoniram Judsons, or William Careys? These men knew what it meant to sacrifice, and God always provided. Oh, that I knew how to give God my all. “Lord, please help me to give you all that I have.”
